The Constant Gardener reveals a world of almost exhaustive despair, yet it never strains credibility. Any worthy thriller must reflect a world that can exist, otherwise we are merely entertained, instead of left reeling with the pain of it all.
The movie feels honest in how it captures poverty and filth. The pharmaceutical heavies are portrayed a bit too villainous. However, getting people to buy their drug so they could make money is ruthless, especially if it is harming people, and that is undeniably inhuman. My heart aches for the poor Africans when I see them getting in line, not knowing that they are in fact sending themselves to death.
From this film, it has made me more aware of the reality of the plight of the Third World. The film offers a powerful condemnation of how the West colludes with those in power to take advantage of the poor and defenceless for financial gain. I really hope that the organisation will do something to stop the suffering of there Africans.
